I was hoping that with macos 11 we would see the deprecation of .DS_Store. I'm not running the beta so perhaps it is, but what has surprised me is its sustained longevity. What are the technical reasons for keeping .DS_Store? It is essentially a application-specific (i.e. Mac Finder) solution that pollutes the data store. Off the top of my head I can think of a number of other solutions to store directory metadata: a Finder-specific database mapping values to directory paths, resource forks (ala OS 9), etc.

Hi HN, I’m looking for a device that I can give to my grandmother that she can use to video call me and other family members from her care home. It needs to either be completely remotely manageable by me, or it needs to not have any real settings that can be changed accidentally (and can be pre-provisioned). Ideally it would be able to connect to the internet over 4g, so it wouldn’t be at the mercy of whether her nursing home has WiFi. Basically what I want is an office phone with a video screen that can connect to a 4g network. Does any such thing exist? If not, does anyone have any suggestions?

Would it be possible to mathematically describe how that number is changing along a time axis?

I tend to prefer to read PDF files on a regular monitor, but moving up and down a page is wonky and most readers don't save your place on the document. Also, sometimes the font is too small when you fit to page and fit to width suffers from paging up and down that doesn't take into account the last visible line. I'd like to hear what you do to read long PDF files, like one of the Springer textbooks. Do you use any readers that support bookmarking and/or note taking and sane pagination? I'm wondering if there is a reader that offers an experience comparable to the experience of reading an ebook on a device like a kindle.

Hello! I'm in the early stages of running a small startup/business and expect to reach $10-20k ARR in the next few months. Once we've acquired a customer, the service is automatic and doesn't require manual input. Each customer represents $2-6K ARR, but we don't know their lifetime value. With a bit of effort and marketing I can imagine reaching $200k ARR in the next few years. Split with my cofounder, this could become a very nice lifestyle business, or we could go all-in and do the whole startup thing. But in a few years, what if it fails!? I'll have a CS degree, but my only experience will be building this. My GPA isn't amazing because I've spent most of my time getting to this point – it hasn't been easy. Any advice?
