Show HN: Explainpaper – Explain jargon in academic papers with GPT-3

heyo! Explainpaper lets you upload a research paper PDF. If you don't understand a formula or sentence, just highlight it and the tool explains it for you I built this a few weeks ago to help me read a neuroscience paper, and it works pretty well! I didn't fine-tune GPT-3, but I do take a lot of context from the paper and feed that into the prompt (not the whole paper). Ppl have uploaded AI, biology, economics, philosophy papers and even law documents. Works in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French and more as well!

New top story on Hacker News: Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal
Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal

I don't usually go in for conspiracy theories, but this one seems pretty clear-cut and I can't see anyone else discussing it online: WhatsApp appears to be selectively censoring references to Signal. Specifically, I had changed my profile picture on WhatsApp to the Signal logo and my ‘About’ text to ‘Message me on Signal - https://signal.org/download/’. However, I noticed recently (after someone happened to open their WhatsApp in front of me and I saw their chat with me) that my WhatsApp contacts are seeing my profile picture and my ‘About’ text as blank. I've checked and this seems to be the case for all of my WhatsApp contacts. See screenshots from me and my friend's phones here: https://ift.tt/mTfpugK On the bright side, this serves as an ideal demo for convincing anyone who doesn't understand why I am trying to migrate them over to Signal. So, I guess, thanks Meta?

Ask HN: What do you use for encrypting your personal stuff?

I used to use Truecrypt (file based virtual encrypted disk). But it shut down under mysterious circumstances. Now there is veracrypt based on the same source code, but I am not sure I trust it. Are there better alternatives? What does everyone use?

Today in Trondheim, Norway, around 100 health doctors & nurses demostrated by walking with torches trough the city against the implementation of a new software in the hospital. The Helseplatform is an adaptation of Epic to the Norwegian Health system. Have this ever happen in history before? How bad can something be that users go out in the street to demostrate?

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Is it still possible to live in a terminal?
Ask HN: Is it still possible to live in a terminal?

In college I did a month long experiment where I only used my computer's terminal emulator to do all my work. I wrote my code/notes in Vim, browsed the web with elinks, and wrote my emails using mutt. It was a great learning experience. Recently I looked into doing this again and ran into a bunch of issues: - My company uses Slack's enterprise auth, and all the CLI slack clients I could find haven't been updated in years and no longer work. - The web is using more javascript than in the past. - Mutt doesn't handle multiple email accounts natively for work/personal. The solutions are hacks at best. Email servers are starting to use more complete auth mechanisms that don't work well with mutt. It seems like the terminal world is slowly getting abandoned in favor of proprietary GUI apps. Anyone still living inside the terminal? Links to tools for Slack are appreciated.

Ask HN: Are we all burned out?

I feel burned out and every one of my friends and coworkers I have talked to are feeling burned out. Having a kid, covid , war in Ukraine and now recession and layoffs have left me fatigued and I can barely learn anything new or look forward to anything . All I want to do is look at my phone and consume more content. And I look back fondly to 2001-2007 and also 2010-2017. Do I need therapy or is everyone feeling the same ?

https://ift.tt/LwlF1OC …a free/librĂ© book about UX research with qualitative methods on motivations, activities written for UX researchers, UX designers and product managers. I have been writing on this book since about 2010 and did a large rewrite during the first half of 2022. (I initally planned this with a bigger tech publisher). This is the link to the full book for online reading: https://ift.tt/sKhI4ba (it’s one long page, so it might take a bit to load)

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: An ultra-light-weight tool to quickly test your ping
Show HN: An ultra-light-weight tool to quickly test your ping

Howdy HN! I find myself testing my ping from time to time, especially when my internet seems wonky while WFH. It feels like there should be an easier way test my ping than puling up a terminal or a complex web app - especially when I'm on my phone or any other device that doesn't have a terminal. I figured I should be the change I wish to see in the world and created this super light ping test. I also created a latency monitoring solution ( https://ift.tt/KHGnYhL ), feel free to clone and try it out! I know there are a lot more mature monitoring solutions out there, but I never did figure out how to set them up. This one is super simple: clone it to some device that's always on, compile it, set up some systemd stuff, and it's ready to rock on port 8180!
